I came across an interesting article entitled “Use employee surveys to learn what staff members think” by Jerry Osteryoung, executive director of the Jim Moran Institute at the Florida State University College of Business, who states:

“Probably the biggest problem with the culture of an organization is management lacking knowledge of the employees’ real perceptions and feelings about the organization. The answer may be an employee survey.

Many firms are moving to employee surveys conducted on the Web in order to evaluate employee perception of the work environment and management’s effectiveness. These online surveys are very cost effective when compared to the archaic approach of compiling surveys with hand-written responses.”

I think Osteryoung is right on the money, not only in his assessment of the number of companies in which senior managers simply do not understand the mindset and concerns of frontline employees, but also in noting that with the value of web-based employee surveys, there simply is no excuse for companies who fail to survey employees at least once a year.

As Osteryoung says,

“Employee surveys are one of the most effective ways to monitor the health of your organization. Now go out and set up a plan to make sure that you survey your staff at least once a year.

You can do this!”
